They have roller derby in the summer at the public Ice rink down town now...
does that count?
hmmm...
if the track bikes were ridden by women and there was full contact and potential for cat fights and ripped lycra... you could prolly get away with a keirin type event for the boys as a lead in...
Bruce! Get on that ASAP... Maybe that's what i should do - race for as short as possible... and push people around on bikes....
Well Zoozie-Q. It is long gone. Part of the banking used to be visible from I-95 near Branch Ave but it was flattened a few years ago.
The football team left in 1931 and track racing lost populatity shortly there after. There has been different developments over the years. The site is currently a Shaw's parkinglot.
According to Quinton Arnold, now dead, there was a track in Pawtucket as well. There was racing back to back nights.
ReplyDeleteHe also used to race a dirt track in Richmond at the Washinton Co. Fairgrounds but not every week.
He would race in NY, NYC, Prov and Pawt every week in the summer.
Quinton was a miserable, racist, mean old bird but he told some good stories.
Stedman's still has some of his scrap books and bikes.

Pop in law got an email today from the RI SPorts Council about helping "support" a "Big" bike race in RI.
ReplyDeleteIt seems to be a bunch of politicos and a money making entity. Prolly don't even know that there are already bike races in RI.
Their website is farked.
Any poop on them? Not sure I want anything to do with "supporting" a bike race.
wait...so where'd the velodrome go?
